About the project

Like any normal person, I oppose genocide. Among people who build and run websites, it seems little known that Wix is an Israeli company, and has been added to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement list.

After some social media posting on Queer Web Design about offering very low-cost transitions away from Wix to another service such as Squarespace or (preferrably) WordPress, I was contacted by LV Penman, a therapist based in the UK who specialises in working with LGBTQIA+ people, and wanted to move away from Wix.

After LV’s personal website was transferred, they asked if Queer Web Design would be interested in quoting for both a transfer and redesign of the Feminist Therapy Network website, which was at the time hosted on Wix. Having read about the boycott Wix movement, and being committed to anti-oppressive practice, Rebecca and LV at the Feminist Therapy Network hired us to build them a new website.

The previous website had no images, and was mostly grey, with an overwhelming amount of content that was often tucked away and difficult to access. We began this project by redeveloping the sitemap, making clear pathways from landing to content for users, and re-organising content.

Bracken Devlin designed a colour scheme and selected a font, as well as creating new logo variations to fit in with the updated branding. Our focus here was clarity of content, so we used different text sizes and line heights to good effect – taking special care to make sure everything works on mobile.

We also set up an Eventbrite Events integration and helped FTN set up their Proton email service, connecting it to their custom domain.

I used GeneratePress as the theme for this website, having learned a lot about it on smaller projects. It has a really useful premium feature of elements, blocks, hooks and layouts, as well as great dynamic data integration on individual blocks. It also works so smoothly with ACF.

My favourite part of this website is the extensive reading lists. Do yourself a favour and check them out!

A big thank you to Billy and Bracken at Queer Web Design for your creativity, patience and expertise in transitioning away from Wix, alongside re-designing and creating a new website that can better host and archive our offerings as we continue to grow the FTN community.
