About the project
Queer Web Design were approached by the artist Ellena Woolf and producer Ste Goatman to build an online platform for the immersive audio experience Voice Notes To My Child Self.
To bring the live piece online, we worked together to design a branding package themed around 80s sci-fi with a queer flavour. Bracken made a logo, background, clouds and drew the time travelling recording booth seen in Ellena’s live tours. I enjoyed putting the elements together and using CSS animations on the website.
Once the platform was designed, I got to work on coding a JavaScript audio player which can select the submitted audio clips at random and play them on any page. This made good use of the WordPress REST API and provided me with a good introduction to working with it.
Unseen on the front end, this website makes use of Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) for the different audio tracks, to allow in future a deeper categorisation and crediting of the clips.
Echoing my previous career as a podcast producer, I also undertook some audio editing and mastering on around an hour of audio.
We really enjoyed this project, and learned a lot! The theme was Underscores, so almost everything you see on the design side was hand-coded.
”Brilliant! Thanks so much, exciting!
